LITTLE HELANG: A Lesson in Resilience and Dreams.

[This article is adapted from social media posts by SKS Hospitality.]

When dreams take flight, even the smallest wings can soar to unimaginable heights. This was the heart of the inspirational talk given to Year 6 Orang Asli students of SK Ladang Pendas, Johor Bahru, as part of the Little HELANG programme under SKS Hospitality's PROJECT HELANG initiative.

Guiding these bright-eyed students through a pivotal moment in their lives, our Director of Public Relations, ABEL Nelson Nang, shared a story that was not just his own, but one that echoed the universal struggles and triumphs of those who dare to dream.

Abel’s life journey, from the humble longhouses of Miri, Sarawak, to a career that has taken him to cities across the globe, is a testament to the strength of determination and self-belief. But this session wasn’t about glorifying his path. It was about showing these children that greatness is within their reach, no matter where they start.

To bring his message home, Abel concluded the session with an unforgettable metaphor, comparing each child to a pencil.

"Each of you is like a pencil," he began, holding it up for the students to see. "And just like this pencil, there are five things you must always remember as you write your story in life."

"You can do incredible things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in the hands of others."

- Success is rarely a solo journey. Lean on mentors, family, and friends to guide and support you.

"You will experience sharpening, and it may hurt, but it will make you better."

- Growth isn’t always easy, but challenges are what mould and refine us.

"Mistakes can be corrected."

- Life isn’t about perfection. It’s about learning, adapting, and moving forward.

"What matters most is what’s inside."

- Your character, values, and heart define who you are, far beyond appearances.

"You must always leave your mark."

- Whatever you do, make it meaningful and impactful. Write your story boldly, no matter the circumstances.

He left them with these words: "Stay sharp. Embrace your mistakes. Be brave enough to leave your mark. And always remember, what’s inside you is what truly matters. You are the best pencil there is!"

For the Year 6 students, poised to embark on their next chapter, this wasn’t just a lesson; it was a call to action. Abel urged them to dream beyond the horizon and aim for a minimum of completing their secondary education - because education is their bridge to a brighter future.

The Little HELANG programme isn’t merely about talks or activities; it’s about igniting courage, building resilience, and fostering hope in young hearts. It’s about showing them that no matter their beginnings, their journeys can lead them to extraordinary destinations.
