Metrosexual I am!

I mentioned that one of the many passions I have is on personal grooming. Paying attention to my appearance is a critical thing to do. Looking and feeling good make me feel alive!

Google defined typical metrosexual as “a man with money to spend, living in or within easy reach of a metropolis – because that’s where all the best shops, clubs, gyms and hairdressers are. He might be officially gay, straight or bisexual, but this is utterly immaterial because he has clearly taken himself as his own love object and pleasure as his sexual preference. Professions, such as modelling, waiting tables, media, pop music and, nowadays, sport, seem to attract them but, truth be told, like male vanity products and herpes, they’re pretty much everywhere.”

The whole definition is pretty accurate; however, I don’t quite agree that a metrosexual man OR simply any man who’s very particular about the way they look must be someone with lots of money to spend. Looking gorgeous and attractive in my opinion does not necessarily revolve around wearing designer clothing and expensive skin care products.

Yes, I do spend quite a fair bit on my grooming, but I don’t splurge the same amount every month, so it’s not too bad. There is a list of grooming activities which is a “must-do” monthly. This includes my hair – at least once a month (preferably twice – depending on the amount of free time available), my facial – once a month and as well as manicure and pedicure, done once in every three weeks.

Why are all these a must-do for me? First impressions are important, and our face is where people make their initial assumptions about what kind of a person we are. I always think that something as simple as how I wash my face can have a subtle impact on my overall appearance. What’s the best way to control my body odour? Am I on the right scent with my cologne? And on hair – I spend lots of time trying to get the hair looking just right. If it’s getting grey or if I’m looking for a change, then I do need to go for dying or colouring.

I don’t spend much on getting new clothes or skin care products every month. Perhaps every two or three months, I’ll go on shopping spree or better still when the city is overloaded with crazy and irresistible bargain everywhere! And there is plenty of budget-friendly clothing you can choose from.

My working clothes are pretty generic and plain, but the mix and match and my wide selection of neckties play a very critical role in ensuring I look good and feel good. Again, not necessarily expensive but trendy and comfy.

So, if you want to be valued more by people around you, it’s time to get groomed. The stoic, self-denying, modest straight male who doesn’t shop enough, time to change and replace yourself with a new kind of man, one less certain of his identity and much more interested in his image – that’s to say, one who was much more interested in being looked at because that’s the only way you can be certain you actually (positively and beautifully) exist.
